What a Recycling Collection Covers

A recycling collection is a booked pickup for material that still has a recovery route, kept apart on the vehicle rather than tipped in with everything else. The crew loads each stream on its own, and the load stays separated after it leaves the building.

Nothing else about the job changes. The booking, the vehicle and the building access work the way they do on any other pickup. What changes is that paper does not arrive soaked in food waste and metal does not arrive buried under it, which is the whole difference between material that can be recovered and material that cannot.

Materials With a Recovery Route

• Paper and card: Flattened cartons, office paper, packaging inserts and paper bags. The largest stream by volume in most homes, and by a wide margin the largest in any office.
• Metals: Drinks cans, food tins, pans, curtain rails, bed frames and the steel inside old appliances. The most valuable stream, and the one worth keeping dry.
• Plastics and glass: Bottles, jars, tubs and rigid containers, rinsed and empty. Film and soft plastics are handled apart from rigid items because they behave differently.
• Electricals: Phones, laptops, kettles, routers, cables and small kitchen appliances. Kept as their own stream because of the components inside rather than the size.

A Sorted Load and a Mixed Load Are Different Jobs

People often assume a recycling collection is a general pickup with a label on it. The vehicle and the crew are the same, but almost everything either side of the loading is different.

Getting the Material Ready

Preparation is the part that decides whether a stream stays recoverable. It takes a few minutes per bag and it is the one job a crew cannot do for you once everything has been mixed.

1. 1Empty and rinse anything that held food or drink, then leave it to dry before it goes anywhere near the paper stack.
2. 2Flatten cartons and pull the tape and labels off, since both drag a clean card stream back down into general waste.
3. 3Box glass rather than bagging it, so nothing breaks in a stairwell, a lift or the back of a vehicle.
4. 4Bag film, wrap and soft plastics on their own and compress them, because that stream is bulk rather than weight.
5. 5Set electricals aside in one place and keep each cable with the item it belongs to.

Dubai adds one rule the guides written for cooler places leave out. Anything holding food residue turns fast in a store room, a garage or a service corridor during the summer months, and it draws pests within a day or two. Rinse first or hold that item back for the general waste bag; a contaminated stream helps nobody.

Apartments, Villas and Business Premises

Where the material is standing changes the shape of the booking more than the volume does. The same four streams behave differently in a tower, a villa and an office.

• In a tower, the service lift slot governs everything, so streams have to be boxed and stacked before the slot opens rather than during it.
• Building rules across Dubai rarely allow material to be staged in a corridor or lobby, which means the stacks wait inside the unit until collection day.
• A villa can hold streams in a garage or a side yard, which is why villa collections tend to be larger and less frequent than apartment ones.
• Offices generate card and paper faster than anything else, so a repeating slot keeps a store room from filling up between visits.
• Retail and food premises produce card in daily volumes, so their collection is sized on frequency rather than on any single load.

Access is the reason two collections of the same size are handled differently. A high floor in Dubai Marina with a booked lift window and a villa in Arabian Ranches with a driveway are not the same job, and an office in Business Bay runs to a third pattern again.

Booking a Recycling Collection

Tell us roughly what you have by stream rather than by bag count, along with your building and floor. Four boxes of card and a bag of cans is a different vehicle from a store room cleared after an office refit of stock and packaging.
