Why Tyres Are Not Household Waste

A tyre is engineered to survive heat, water, abrasion and years of load. Every property that makes it good on a car makes it difficult once it comes off, which is why it sits outside the household waste system rather than inside it.

• It does not break down. A tyre buried in a landfill is still a tyre decades later, taking up the same volume it did on the day it was dropped there.
• It traps air and works its way back to the surface under load, which is why sites that accept general waste do not want them mixed into it.
• It burns badly. A rubber fire is hard to put out and produces heavy smoke, so tyres are kept out of general loads that may be compacted or stored in bulk.
• It holds standing water, and in a climate with year-round irrigation a stack of tyres in a garden becomes a mosquito breeding site within days of a wash-down.
• It is a genuinely recoverable material, which is the reason a separate route exists at all rather than a disposal problem with no answer.

Dubai's household collection is built around bagged general waste and separated dry recyclables. Tyres sit outside both, in the same category as paint, appliances and furniture: things a building's bins are not sized or intended for. The Three Routes an Old Tyre Can Take

Almost every tyre a resident needs to shift goes one of three ways. Which one applies depends on where the tyre is at the moment you need it gone.

The first route is the one people miss, and it is by far the easiest. A workshop changing four tyres is already dealing with four old ones, and the moment to hand yours over is while the car is on the ramp rather than after you have driven the old set home and stacked it in the garage.

Where Household Tyres Come From

The tyres a clearance crew finds in Dubai homes arrive by a small number of routes, and knowing which one applies tells you how many you are dealing with before you open the garage door.

• The kept spare set: A full set removed at replacement and kept because it looked like it had life in it. Four tyres in a villa garage, usually stacked flat in a corner and untouched since the day they were put there.
• The sold or exported car: A vehicle is sold or exported and its spare wheel or an odd mismatched replacement stays behind in the garage. Usually one or two tyres, and often still on a rim.
• Garden and play use: Tyres repurposed as planters, sandpit edging or a swing, which perish in the sun and hold irrigation water. These need the same route as any other tyre once they come out of the garden.
• Trailers, quads and small equipment: Boat trailers, buggies and garden machinery all carry tyres that outlive the equipment, and these are frequently the ones still sitting in a store years later.

Keeping a set in a villa garage on the assumption it will be reused rarely works out here. A tyre stored in Dubai heat perishes from the sidewall inward whether it is fitted or not, and a set kept for two summers in an unconditioned garage is usually past the point where a workshop would put it back on a car.

Preparing Tyres for Collection

Preparation for tyres is short, and getting it right is mostly about making the load safe to lift and the tyres acceptable at the other end.

1. 1Count them and say the number when you book. Tyres travel separately from a general load, so the crew needs the count in advance rather than on arrival.
2. 2Say whether they are on rims. A tyre on a steel or alloy rim is a different item, since the metal is recovered separately and the weight roughly doubles.
3. 3Tip out any standing water and let them drain, particularly for tyres that have been in a garden or on a driveway.
4. 4Bring them to ground level and out of the garden if you can. A tyre carried through a house leaves marks that are difficult to shift.
5. 5Keep them separate from the rest of a clear-out load rather than stacking furniture on top, so the crew can load them as their own item.

What Happens to a Tyre After Collection

A collected tyre has a genuine recovery route, which is the reason it is worth separating rather than a rule for its own sake. Where a specific tyre goes depends mostly on how much tread is left and whether the casing is sound.

• Tyres with legal tread and a sound casing are resold as part-worn, the highest-value outcome and the least common one for a set that has been sitting in a garage.
• Truck and heavy vehicle casings can be retreaded, which reuses the expensive part of the tyre and replaces only the running surface.
• The rest is shredded and granulated into crumb rubber, which goes into playground and sports surfaces, matting and moulded products.
• Steel wire is separated magnetically during granulation and recovered as scrap metal on its own stream.
• What cannot be granulated is used as a fuel in industrial processes, which recovers the energy content rather than sending the volume to landfill.

What Not to Do With an Old Tyre in Dubai

Most of the trouble people run into with tyres comes from four habits, and all four are avoidable once you know the routes above exist.

• Do not leave them beside communal bins or in a building bin room. The regular collection is not equipped for them, so they stay where you left them and become a matter for building management.
• Do not put them in a mixed junk load without saying so. A load declared as furniture and boxes that arrives with six tyres in it has to be re-sorted, and that costs the visit time.
• Do not burn them, in a garden, a plot or anywhere else. Rubber smoke is heavy, toxic and travels, and this is the single worst thing that can be done with a tyre.
• Do not leave them stacked outdoors on a plot or a verge. Between the heat and the irrigation they collect water fast, and standing water in a Dubai summer is a mosquito problem within days.
