Is There a Moving Permit in Dubai?

No government moving permit exists. When people in a Dubai move talk about a permit, they mean a document their building or community issues to control use of the shared lift and loading area. Buildings require their own approval because a move affects shared space: the service lift, the loading bay, the corridors and every other resident who wants to use them that day. Management controls those, so management sets the rules.

What Your Building Requires

For an apartment, the core document is a move-in or move-out permit, sometimes called an NOC, issued by building management on request. Ask for it as soon as your date is fixed.

• A completed request form with your unit, the date and the time window.
• A few working days' notice, or a week in a large building or at month-end.
• Proof of tenancy or, if you are moving in, the handover paperwork.
• A refundable deposit against damage to the lift lobby and corridors, in many buildings.
• The moving company's name and vehicle details for the form.

The deposit is released after a walk-through of the common areas once the move is done. Ask how much it is and how it is returned when you apply, so it does not sit unclaimed.

Parking and Access for the Removal Vehicle

The practical blocker on the day is where a three to seven tonne truck stands for the two to four hours a move takes. Sort this before the crew arrives, not while they circle the block.

• Reserved visitor bays: Coned off by security for your slot. The usual answer at an apartment building, arranged when you collect the permit.
• A dedicated loading bay: Built into many newer towers and booked alongside the service lift, so the truck backs in a few metres from the lift doors.
• Street parking: Works where it is allowed, but check for resident-only or paid zones before the day rather than after a ticket.
• Basement parking: Has a height barrier, commonly two to two and a half metres, that stops a box truck. The truck stays at grade and items come up in the lift.

Give the moving company the access details when you book: the gate to use, where the truck waits, and the service lift's internal dimensions. A wardrobe that will not fit the lift changes the whole plan.

Gated Communities: The Vehicle Gate Pass

A villa in a gated community adds a step an apartment does not have: the removal truck and crew are registered at the security gate before they can come in. Some communities escort commercial vehicles or route them through a specific gate.

• Your name and unit or villa number as the sponsoring resident.
• The moving company's name, the vehicle and its plate.
• The crew count and the time window you expect them.
• A move-out approval from the community office, in some developments, on top of the gate registration.

Timing: Permitted Hours and the Summer Factor

Most buildings limit moves to daytime working hours, and many exclude Fridays, public holidays or anything after early evening to keep noise down. Confirm the allowed window before you book the crew, not after.

• Take the earliest slot in summer. Heat on the crew and queues for a single service lift both get worse as the day goes on.
• Avoid the last three days of the month, when lift demand peaks across the building.
• Build in a buffer. A job quoted at two hours often runs to four once lift waits and parking are counted.

Coordinating the Truck With the Service Lift

The common failure is a mismatch: the lift is held for nine, the truck arrives at eleven, and the slot has gone to someone else. Give both the same start time and confirm it with the moving company the day before.

What Happens If You Skip It

Skipping the building or community approval does not save time. It moves the delay to the worst possible moment, with a loaded truck and a paid crew already on site.

• Turned back at the gate with the truck loaded, and rebooked for another day.
• No service lift access, so everything goes down the stairs, slowly.
• The truck moved on by security part way through the load.
• The crew's half day charged whether the move happens or not.
• A damage charge against your deposit for an unprotected lift or a scraped corridor.
